Our friends over at @surfriderocmd have teamed up with @oceana , @trashfreemd , and @marylandenvironmentalservice to create a petition in support of the statewide plastic bag ban! The goal of the petition is to influence the Maryland legislation in passing bills SB 0223 and HB 0314. Over 6.2 billion plastic bags have been produced JUST TODAY. A common misconception of plastic bags and plastic film is that curbside recycling programs actually DO NOT recycle these forms of plastic. States such as California, Hawaii, Oregon, New York, and Delaware have already banned the use of single use, checkout-style plastic bags. Help us put an end to the production of #singleuse plastic! Have you heard? Maryland has proposed a train system connecting Baltimore, MD and Washington, D.C. Spanning 40+ miles, the Maglev Project would destroy more than 200 acres of land including the Greenbelt Forest Reserve and the Patuxent Research Refuge. This has been recorded to be the last large Green Space between Baltimore and D.C., containing biodiverse wildlife and contiguous forests. This train is not a necessity, it has been proposed for convenience. Projected dates of completion have been stated to be in 2022. There is still time left to help stop this; help us by signing the petition in our bio!

We are declaring an Ocean and Climate emergency! Climate change has been recorded to cause sea level rise and ocean acidification (the rise of pH). The level of greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere have increased, causing the ocean temperatures to rise. @surfersagainstsewage has launched a petition to highlight the significance of a healthy ocean through Highly Marine Protected Areas and an increased investment in ocean rewilding. 2020 was the hottest year ever recorded in history. We have just lived through the hottest decade ever recorded in history. We have surpassed the point in time where denying climate change is simply not an option. As a society, we must take action now. Greenhouse gases are recorded in order to indicate how anthropogenic activity affects the trend in climate. The average temperature of our planet has increased as a whole by 2 degrees Fahrenheit since the 19th Century. Rising temperatures have a detrimental impact on the planet, animals, and even human life. Sea ice and ice sheet mass has declined, sea levels have risen, and heat waves have become much longer. The safety and quality of life is jeopardized. What can we do to help? Contact your local officials and politicians, speak up on the issue. Reduce your carbon footprint. Seek out renewable energy sources, or companies that use these alternatives. Invest in energy-efficient resources. Reconsider transportation options. Decrease your water consumption.
